Vivian Gladys Cahill, 87, died peacefully following a brief illness on Tuesday, October 1, 2019 at Vassar Brothers Hospital. She was born to the late Ralph and Dorothy Deats on June 24, 1932 in Binghamton, NY. She married her husband of 55 years; the late Joseph T. Cahill Jr., on September 16, 1949 in Pleasant Valley, NY.
Vivian grew up in Pleasant Valley and attended Arlington High School, in Poughkeepsie, NY. She met the love of her life at a dance in Pleasant Valley. The story is told that Joe wanted to drive her home that night from the dance, but her father said "you didn't bring her to the dance, so you're not bringing her home!" After living in three adjacent houses on North Avenue, they built their dream home for their six children on Smith Road.
Vivian was a devoted mother who stayed home to raise her children until the youngest started kindergarten. For many years, she worked in the cafeteria at West Road Elementary School in Pleasant Valley. Always sharing her joyful nature, she dressed as a witch complete with green makeup, pointy nose, and striped stockings every Halloween. Joe and Vivian were active in many clubs and organizations including: The Pleasant Valley Vagabonds Camping Club, Fire Department, American Legion, Historical Society, Health Committee and the Vanderbilt Mansion Garden Club. They supported numerous activities for their children including: Boy Scouts, Girl Scouts, 4H, Swimming Lessons, baseball, football, etc. Her own personal interests included: Home Bureau, the Tuesday Club, the Red Hat Society and was also known for her beautiful wedding cakes. She was a recent member of Netherwood Baptist Church in Salt Point, NY which she also attended as a child with her sister, Dolores. They walked to church together every Sunday morning from their home on Smith Road.
Vivian is survived by five of her six children, Timothy Cahill (Nancy), Michael Cahill (Edgar), Kathleen Cruger (Butch), Susan Lasko, and Maureen Pratt (Joseph). She is also survived by her ten adored grandchildren, Sharleen, Ben, Chad, Kyle, Daniel, Michelle, Brandi, Darryl Sue, Vivian, and Julia, twenty one great grandchildren, her sister's three children, Dawn (Allen), Kevin (Terri), and Karl (Roxanne), extended family and numerous dear friends.
She is pre-deceased by her husband Joseph T. Cahill Jr., son Daniel J. Cahill, son-in-law Darryl Lasko, sister Dolores Albrecht and her husband Fred, Joseph's parents Joseph T. Cahill Sr. and Mildred, sister Barbara Chase and dear Aunt Maude.
At the family’s request, a private funeral service is planned. The Cahill family extends their kindest regards to all who loved her throughout her remarkable life. Vivian effortlessly embodied the meaning of her name - "Full of Life". Arrangements are under the direction of the Wm. G. Miller & Son FH, Inc., 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie, NY 12603.
