Robert Hugh Cady Sr., 95, life-long resident of Poughkeepsie NY, passed away peacefully at home surrounded by his family, on Sunday March 7, 2021. He was born October 16, 1925. He was the son of Robert Joseph Cady and Ann Martin Cady. Bob was predeceased by his wife Sally Cunningham Cady on April 8, 2011. They were married at Holy Trinity Church in Poughkeepsie, NY on April 20, 1947. Bob was also predeceased by his son Robert “Skip” Cady Jr. and brother in-law Charles Cunningham.
At the age of 17 Bob enlisted in the United States Marine Corps. He served his country from September 9, 1943 through May 6, 1946. During this time, he served in the 5th Marine Division on Iwo Jima.
Bob was a city of Poughkeepsie firefighter with 36 years of service. His love of firefighting and serving the public started at the age of 17 with Arlington Fire Company as a volunteer, where he has been a life member for 78 years.
He was an avid sports enthusiast; Inducted into the Dutchess County Fastpitch Softball Hall of Fame in 1987. He was a Mets, Jets, and Notre Dame fan until the end.
Survivors include sister in-law Janet Cunningham of Tampa, FL., daughters and son in-laws Sandra and Viktor Labodin of Gardiner, NY, Marcia and John O’Brien of Millbrook, NY. He is also survived by grandchildren, Erin Bennett, Marc Labodin, Daniel Labodin, Christine Rosenthal, Robert H Cady III, Jessica Cady, and “grand pup” Buddy O’Brien. In addition, there are 12 great grandchildren and several nieces, nephews and cousins.
A special thanks to Poppy’s favorite nurses, his great granddaughters Bridget and Sydney Bennett. These two angels never left his side.
Visitation will be Sunday, March 14, 2021 2-4pm at William Miller Funeral Home 371 Hooker Avenue, Poughkeepsie, NY 12603.
A Mass of Christian Burial will be held Monday, March 15, 2021 at 10am in Holy Trinity Church 775 Main St., Poughkeepsie, NY 12603. Burial will follow in the family plot in St. Peter’s Cemetery with military honors.
