Obituary for Luis A. Rivera

Luis A. Rivera (August 11th, 1937 - February 27th, 2021) peacefully passed away at home with family by his side after a long illness. He was laid to rest on March 11th at the Poughkeepsie Rural Cemetery. Luis is predeceased by grandsons Sgt. James Milano and Mark Milano, son-in-law Chris Chamuris, and his mother Monseratt Rivera and sister Elmelita Gasking. Luis was born in Albonito, Puerto Rico and immigrated to New York City with his family as a teenager. He was an altar boy at Lady of Guadalupe Church in Manhattan where he later met his wife Nilda (Delgado) Rivera of 63 years. During his time at the church, Luis became a Boy Scout and eventually also a Scout Master. His love of the outdoors was made permanent through his property along the Delaware river, which was simply and affectionately referred to as "the cabin". Luis relocated his family to Red Oaks Mill and operated a Carvel ice cream shop for 20 years in Poughkeepsie. He was involved with the Kiwanis Club, a member of the Poughkeepsie Elks Lodge #275 where he was an exalted ruler from 1990-1991 and a part of the St. Martin de Porres Knights of Columbus Council #17304. He retired to his cabin where he and his family made many happy memories. Luis is survived by his wife Nilda, daughters Nilda, Amy (Chris), Mary, and Jennifer, son Louis (Michelle), many loving grandchildren and one great-granddaughter. Luis was a loving husband and father and will be missed dearly by his friends and family.
