Surrounded by love, Eileen M. Furlong passed away peacefully on her mother’s birthday, January 2, 2023. She was 91 years old and her passing marks a life of dedicated and unconditional love for her family and friends.
Eileen was a devout Catholic, who attended St. Martin de Porres parish (Poughkeepsie, NY) for over 54 years, guiding her family to live a life of kindness and love.
She was born in New York City in 1931 and is predeceased by her loving husband, Dr. Robert E. Furlong (“Bob”), her parents, Nora and Charles Hogan and her brother, Rev. Robert C. Hogan, SJ.
Eileen grew up in Elmhurst, NY, graduating from Bishop McDonnell Memorial High School, and later St. Catherine’s Nursing School (Brooklyn, NY), where she received her nursing degree.
On June 23, 1956, Eileen married Bob, the love of her life, at Ascension Church in Elmhurst, NY. In 1959, Eileen and Bob moved to Poughkeepsie, NY where they raised their seven children.
During the 1980’s Eileen and Bob supported “Project Children,” hosting two children from Northern Ireland each summer. Most memorably, Mandy McSweeny and Tracey Nicsuibhne.
Eileen (“Nana”) was best known for her Irish wit and sense of humor, everyone loved her. Later in life, there were very few conversations with Nana where she did not break into spontaneous made-up songs or get you to laugh and smile.
Eileen is survived by her siblings, Bro. Patrick J. Hogan of Queens, NY and Cornelius J. Hogan of Newton, MA, as well as her seven children and their extended families: Robert (Angela) Furlong of Poughkeepsie, NY, Mary (Jeff) Moskowitz of Saco, ME, Michael (JoAnn) Furlong of Andover, MA, Kathleen Furlong of Aliso Viejo, CA, Patricia (Michael) White of San Juan Capistrano, CA, Daniel (Tara) Furlong of Newton, MA, and Patrick (Katrina) Furlong of Old Orchard Beach, ME. (along with Tony Polito (#9) and predeceased by Trish LeSoine (#8)).
Nana’s memory will live on with her fourteen loving grandchildren: Tai Marie Furlong, Katie, Brian and Shannon Moskowitz, Ryan and Sean Furlong, Christopher and Danielle White, Mary Eileen Furlong, and Aidan, Shaelin, Teagan, Kieran and Declan Furlong.
Friends may call from 4-8pm on Wednesday, January 11, 2023 at the Wm. G. Miller and Son FH, Inc., 371 Hooker Ave., Poughkeepsie. A Mass of Christian Burial will be held at 9:30AM on Thursday January 12, 2023 at St. Martin De Porres Church, 118 Cedar Valley Rd., Poughkeepsie, Burial will be in the family plot in Calvary Cemetery.
