Dr. Fung-Yuel Chang, a resident of Poughkeepsie, NY, passed away on May 5, 2022, just one month shy of his 86th birthday. Dr. Chang was an award-winning author, educator and inventor who began his career at IBM, where he spent 25 years as an electrical engineer. During his time there, he was granted three patents related to charge-couple device designs. In 1992, he received the Guillemin-Cauer Best Paper Award from the IEEE Circuit and System Society.
Upon his retirement from IBM, Dr. Chang served as an adjunct professor at University of California at Santa Cruz, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, the National Chiao-Tung University of Taiwan, and his alma mater, Columbia University. He was a very popular professor and received numerous teaching awards.
Dr. Chang loved to share his love of mathematics with others and published a two-volume book set, Ax=b in C++, as well as the books: Solving the Mystery of Chinese Magic Squares and Modern Algebra.
Dr. Chang is survived by his wife, Catherine, his son, Richard, his daughter, Dr. Irene Chang, son-in-law Bob DeLuca and his two grandsons Koa and Bodhi.
