Dorothy “Dot” Osborn, age 94, passed away peacefully in her sleep on May 7, 2021 at the Lutheran Care Center in Poughkeepsie, New York.
Dorothy was born on April 19, 1927 in Montgomery, New York to parents Lawrence Edward Williams and Cecilia Veronica Doherty Williams. She graduated from Montgomery High School in 1945. She married Emory Raymond Osborn in Montgomery, New York on March 27, 1948 and lived in the Montgomery area for several years before settling on Cavo Drive in LaGrange for 65 years.
Dorothy is survived by her sons, John E. Osborn (German) of New York, NY, Lawrence G. Osborn of Queens, NY and James R. Osborn (Janice) of Poughkeepsie, NY, eight grandchildren, Jason Osborn (Renae), Marie Hughes (Dave), Stephen Osborn (Danielle), Matthew Osborn (Rachel), Kathryn Phelps (Jeff), Lauren Spradlin (Luke), Jim Osborn Jr. (Nicole), Nancy Osborn, and eight great grandchildren. She is also survived by four nieces and eight nephews and Christine Osborn, Rachael Osborn and Theresa Osborn.
She was predeceased by her husband, Emory R. Osborn, her siblings Antoinette M. Suydam, Laurene T. Schmidt, Lawrence E. Williams Jr, as well as siblings Laurene Cecilia Williams and Jean Cecilia Williams, who passed in early childhood. She was also predeceased by her close friend Ben Keeler and by her granddaughter and former housemate Eileen Osborn and her great granddaughter Sadie Jane Hughes.
Dorothy was a proud Mom and homemaker who also worked as a library clerk in Titusville Elementary School, retiring in 1985. Her husband Emory was the Assistant Treasurer at Central Hudson Gas & Electric Company.
Mom loved the trips to Cape Cod & Florida with Dad, Aunt Jean, Uncle George, her grandchildren and other family members, maple walnut ice cream, Bavarian crème doughnuts, gardening, reading, the cottage in her backyard, watching old episodes of The Andy Griffith Show, naps and a good cup of tea. She cherished her time with her family and good friends. She never missed a concert (especially all of Jim’s concerts and musicals at Vassar College & Roosevelt High School), a ball game, a graduation, a parade or any other event that included her children or grandchildren. She welcomed new people and new circumstances into her life with understanding, acceptance and grace. She was the best listener and liked nothing more than a good conversation and laughs with family members and friends. She was an avid reader and bird watcher and enjoyed arts and crafts and gardening. She was a member of the Ralph T. Waterman Bird Club and served in leadership positions in the Deerfield Acres Civic Association and she and Dad hosted annual outdoor family holiday celebrations and community picnics on their property. She was also active in the Dutchess County Home Bureau, where she participated with other neighborhood women in arts and crafts projects and collected food donations for local homeless shelters.
The family wishes to thank the wonderful staff at the Lutheran Care Center, especially in 1 South, for taking such good care of Mom for the last year and a half. Special thanks and appreciation to Mom’s neighbors and good friends Anita and George Harnen who helped Mom with numerous chores around her house so that she could stay at home as long as possible and for raising her spirits with so many wonderful conversations. Special appreciation also to Theresa and Nancy Osborn for their compassionate care and companionship of Mom (Grandma), including almost daily window visits and numerous transports to doctors during her last years as her health declined.
A private memorial service for the family will be held at the William G. Miller & Son Funeral Home in Poughkeepsie later this week followed by a graveside service at Riverside Cemetery in Montgomery, NY. Pastor Paul Lent from the Freedom Plains Presbyterian Church will officiate.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations in her name be made to The American Diabetes Association or The American Heart Association.
