It is with great sadness that we announce the loss of Dimitrios “Jimmy” Voulgaris, 81, of Poughkeepsie, who passed away at Vassar Brothers Medical Center on Thursday, March 23. Jimmy was born on June 4, 1941, at Northern Dutchess Hospital in Rhinebeck, NY. He was pre-deceased by his parents, George, and Sophia (Poulmas) Voulgaris. Jimmy was a graduate of Poughkeepsie High School, class of ’59, and attended Dutchess Community College. He proudly served in the United States Army from 1963 to 1966, with tours in both Korea and Vietnam. He served with the 7th Army Postal Unit and received the National Defense Service Medal, Vietnam Service Medal, and Vietnam Campaign Medal. He was honorably discharged on November 4, 1966. Upon his discharge, he continued to work with the U.S. Postal Service, but made a career working for various banks as a computer analyst until his retirement. Jimmy was an avid reader and a voracious researcher. His life-long passion was researching and compiling volumes of information, specifically, but not exclusively, about Native American peoples including their history, ancient migrations and origins, and customs. Jimmy was a “walking” encyclopedia. Besides his research, he enjoyed dancing, watching soccer and college football, and talking to anyone who would listen. He loved having a good prime rib steak, and macaroni was always on the menu. Jimmy was an extremely generous, youthful, and fun-loving guy.
Jimmy is survived by his siblings: Anna Velie, Tina Kalogridis and brother-in-law Louie, Michael Voulgaris, Nancy Trigonis and brother-in-law Tony; his nieces and nephews: George Kalogridis and Marge, James Kalogridis and Josie, Kelly Greene, his godchild, and Jon, Kacie Newport and Michael, Karissa Voulgaris Houghtaling and Brian, Michael Trigonis and Anna, Sophia Trigonis, Jennifer Green, Holly Allgaier, and Melissa Decker.
